Golden hour is short in London, so Nancy brings her own. Curvy at 170 cm, she has golden blonde hair that falls long and looks sun-warmed even in October, and bright blue eyes. Her style is beach glamour translated for the city: a gold-toned wrap dress, bronzed shoulders, strappy sandals, a light scent of coconut and citrus. Early thirties and entirely sure of her own style, she spends no time at all on anything that does not flatter her.
Sunny is not an act. Nancy is easygoing to the point of being unflappable and energetic enough to make a Tuesday feel like a Friday. She swims most mornings, plans road trips with maps, playlists and the fewest possible hotels, and has a love of sushi that borders on devotion. Her English is warm and open, and her laugh turns heads in a restaurant for all the right reasons. She is happy to talk about anything, and better still at listening.
Sunset dinners usually mean Roka on Charlotte Street in Fitzrovia, where a long counter wraps around the robata grill and the buzz never tips into noise. She takes two seats at the counter, orders a sushi selection and something from the grill, and has made friends with the chef by the second plate. Afterwards a walk back through the quieter Fitzrovia streets towards your hotel, or a cab if her sandals have had enough.
Her Covent Garden home sits close to everything around Leicester Square, and weeknights are open. For a weekend, send your request to booking by Wednesday.
An evening with Nancy
Nancy's ideal booking is a sunset dinner. She meets you at half past six, when the light over the West End turns warm, in a gold dress and a very good mood. First a cold drink at a pavement table on Charlotte Street, then the counter seats, where she orders confidently and passes you the best piece from every plate.
She talks about the coast road she drove last summer and asks where you would go with a free week and a car. After dinner she likes to walk, arm linked with yours, towards your hotel, and in her company the last stretch somehow feels like the best part. Sunny, easy and never in a hurry, she is a bright end to any day.
Whatever the chef is excited about, then yellowtail, then one more round of whatever we liked best. Always trust the counter.
Because the city turns golden for about twenty minutes, and I refuse to spend them indoors if we can possibly help it.
Road trip, windows down, snacks on the dashboard and a terrible playlist. But a long night in the West End runs a very close second.
