Meet Violetta

// Home district

The tallest woman in the room is usually the one laughing hardest at the comedian, and more often than not it is Violetta. She stands 178 cm, tall and slender, her black hair long and so sleek and straight it looks lacquered, her brown eyes giving very little away. Her glamour has a warm gold edge: a draped column dress, gold cuffs, a clutch the colour of desert sand at sunset. In her early thirties, she is elegant and mysterious right up to the moment something is funny.

Confidence sits easily on her. Violetta swims long lengths most mornings, which gives her that calm, unhurried stride, and she spends free afternoons in bookshops, reading the first chapter of five novels before choosing one. Stand-up comedy is her unexpected love; she follows the circuit, spots new comics early and quotes the best lines back with perfect timing. Her English is smooth and low, and she can stay wonderfully mysterious about herself while drawing your whole story out of you.

For Violetta the perfect West End night means The Comedy Store on Oxendon Street, just off Piccadilly Circus, a basement institution where the best comedians test new material. She books seats slightly back from the stage, far enough to avoid being picked on and near enough to catch every expression. Afterwards dinner somewhere elegant nearby, a debate over which act was best, and a stroll home to your hotel beneath the lights of Haymarket.

Abroad until 2 October, Violetta picks up her dinner dates again once she is home in Belgravia. Requests for a late show and supper anywhere in the West End can go to booking now.

04 · The evening

An evening with Violetta

Violetta's ideal evening starts with a laugh and ends with a secret. She meets you at the hotel at eight, tall in gold and black, and walks you to a basement comedy club where she has already reserved seats. Watching her watch comedy is half the fun: she leans in, catches every line and laughs without a shred of self-consciousness.

Dinner afterwards is somewhere with white tablecloths and discreet service. She repeats the best joke of the night with better timing than the comic, then turns the conversation smoothly towards you. The walk back is slow, her stride matching yours. At the hotel she slips off her gold cuffs, tells you about the novel she is halfway through and keeps you guessing about everything else.

// In her words

Someone whose name you would not know yet, trying out five minutes on a wet Tuesday. In a year everyone will be quoting them.

I am not, I simply prefer your stories. Keep me laughing and I might tell you one of mine.

Five books at once, badly. I read a chapter of each in the shop and keep the one that made me miss my stop.
