Daylight suits Cindy, and she brings some of it indoors with her. Long blonde waves, blue eyes that crease when she smiles, a slim 168 cm frame kept supple by yoga: she looks like a weekend on the water even on a grey Tuesday in W1. She dresses to match that mood, a white shirt knotted at the waist, wide linen trousers, sandals with a modest heel, sunglasses pushed up into her hair until the light has gone. In her mid twenties and entirely without pretence, she is the easiest possible company for a first booking.

Cheerful is not a performance with her. Cindy is sporty in the practical sense, happiest on a dinghy in a stiff breeze or on a mat at seven in the morning, and easygoing enough that a change of plan hardly registers. She speaks English, warm and quick, and her camera habit means she notices small things: the light on a shopfront, a good coat on a stranger, the one café table with the best view. Ask to see her pictures and she will show you three and describe the other forty.

An afternoon with her often starts at The Photographers' Gallery on Ramillies Street, a few minutes from Oxford Circus, where she walks the current show twice and then spends far too long among the photobooks. From there it is an easy wander through the side streets towards a pavement table and something cold, then back to your hotel as the light begins to change. She keeps her days relaxed and her early evenings open.

Home for Cindy is Chelsea, and her working hours run from lunchtime into early evening. Plan a daylight meeting near Carnaby and mention the time; booking replies with her confirmation while the sun is still up.

04 · The evening

An evening with Cindy

Cindy's favourite booking starts around three. A flat white on Beak Street, a lap of whatever exhibition is on, and a friendly debate about whether black and white photography is honest or merely flattering. She walks fast and stops often, usually to point at something you would otherwise have missed, a painted sign or a cat asleep in a shop window.

By six the sun is low over Regent Street and she suggests a glass of something cold at a pavement table, followed by your hotel before the after-work crowd arrives. If you have a flight or a dinner later, she keeps an eye on the time for you and leaves right on cue, bright and unbothered, the afternoon somehow feeling longer than it was.

// In her words

Guilty. Yoga at seven, coffee at eight. It is why I love afternoon bookings, I have already had my day and I am completely yours for the rest of it.

Only if you ask, and only of the city. The best souvenir of Soho is the light on Old Compton Street, not either of us.

Rain is lovely in a gallery. Shine is lovely on a boat. London usually hands us both before teatime, so I pack for each.
